Frequently Asked Questions
-
Where can I find the GPX files?
In the past we have sent GPX files only to participants in advance of the event. We are considering making our courses available to the public in 2025.
-
How is the course marked?
Our courses are marked with reusable cloth ribbons, large metal signboards, and agricultural lime (chalk) on the ground. We also place marshalls (or checkpoints) at several junctions.
-
What are the cutoff times?
Cutoff times are 13.5 hours for every ultra marathon, 6.5 hours for the half marathon, and 3 hours for the 10K.
-
Are walkers and hikers welcome?
Absolutely! We’ve created our event such that every member of your group will have a race that suits them.
The most walkable events — largely determined by time cutoffs — are the 10K, the half marathon, and the 50K ultra marathon.
-
What happened to the full marathon?
We removed the full marathon after the 2024 event.
It was a very tough marathon, and even the 10.5 hour cutoff was tough for many participants.
We’ve opted to encourage runners (and hikers) to register for the 50K ultra marathon, which is a very similar course and offers a 13.5 hour cutoff.
-
How frequent are checkpoints & feed zones?
Checkpoints on the halt and ultras are located approximately every 7 kilometers. Every checkpoint has hydration, and only one checkpoint does not also serve food.
Feed zone locations will be shared with participants in advance of the race.
The 10K has no checkpoints nor hydration / nutrition on course. -
What hydration and nutrition is offered at checkpoints?
All checkpoints are stocked with water, Skratch hydration product, and oral rehydration solution.* Some checkpoints also have sodas, coffee, hot chocolate, or hot tea.
Feed zones are stocked with a combination of fruit (avocados, bananas, oranges, apples), date bars, nuts or nut snacks, crisps, chocolate, and salt.
*Please note: We do NOT offer cups for drinking at checkpoints; please bring a cup, bottle or reservoir / hydration pack you can fill.
-
Do I have to sleep in a tent?
If you stay with us in our race village, yes. We only offer camping facilities.
Though we do have some terrific walk-in VIP tents available for rent, with cot beds and proper linens and duvets. There are some terrific lodges nearby, though, and you can find a list of those on this page.
-
What is it like running at over 3000 meters?
Everyone reacts differently to high altitude running, and it’s impossible to know how you will react to it until you do it.
Lower oxygen levels will make breathing feel more difficult, and your body may have to work harder to deliver oxygen to your muscles.
To compensate your heart rate typically increases and your pace will slow (ahem, or you should slow it!).
-
What should I do to acclimate?
Unless someone sponsors a big prize purse and winning the event becomes infinitely more lucrative than it currently is, you’re probably better just arriving in Tanzania when you can and planning on running the race slower than you might have otherwise.
